Key Elements to Creating a Rock Solid Training Program Plan
As you round the corner to the end of the year, you’re likely to be neck deep in training planning for the upcoming year. How do you ensure you’re gathering the right information? Whether training in person or online, a well-developed training program plan ensures you follow a well thought out plan for success.
Here are a few tips to get your training planning on the right track.
Strategic Alignment of Training
Before you begin your training program plan, it’s important to understand how training fits into your company’s overarching business goals. For example, if you’re heading up sales training, the goals and objectives you establish for the plan should map to the sales goals of the organization. Be aware of what you want to accomplish and craft program goals and objectives that clearly state desired outcomes.
Executive Buy-In for Training
Clearly state ROI to demonstrate the value of your program and make it easier to get management on board. Avoid lengthy details and communicate by using short, actionable statements. For example, if your goal is to improve close rates of the sales team, then state this by saying: “We will see a 15 percent better close rate after training which will result in $X amount of new business.” Do your homework, and keep the details for the questions that are likely to be asked.
Carefully Consider Your Training Location
The location of your training is critical to success. Transfer of learning may not happen at all if there are distractions, technical failures or other disruptions to the learning process. While you may have an empty conference room at your organization, consider how this environment will impact your learners. Can this room be easily re-arranged for collaboration? Is it properly wired for technology? Do you have a dedicated technical and event assistant available to help support the event?
Consider both the learning and cost benefits of holding your training offsite and include this in your plan. Work with vendors who can help you secure the room and requirements you need in the desired locations. Planning the location well in advance allows you to maximize savings and provides peace of mind, knowing that you’ve secured the best possible location for a superior learning experience.
Scale of Your Training Program
In your plan, consider all of the training events you anticipate holding for the year. There are likely to be financial benefits to planning multiple events at once. You can often receive discounts on content, printing, and room rentals by purchasing on a larger scale.
Avoid Last Minute Charges
Anticipate every resource you might need for your training programs throughout the year and include these in your budget. Secure offsite locations, instructors and facilitators, course material, etc. well in advance. By doing so, you’ll avoid last-minute charges that can eat away at the budget.
Create Accountability with Training Program KPI
Creating a well thought out training plan makes it considerably easier to track the success of your program. Your plan should include specific key performance indicators (KPIs) to gauge ROI and program success.
Budgeting Your Training Progam
One of the biggest parts of a training plan will include a comprehensive list of anticipated expenses and revenues. A typical training budget will include fixed, variable and direct costs associated with the event including materials to communicate and market your program, training delivery costs (e.g., room rental fees, equipment, etc.), course development, course materials, food and beverage, instructors, travel, and lodging. You may be asked to include indirect costs as well, which include company resources needed to execute the training as well as potential productivity loss.
