7 Ways to Drive the Success of Your Virtual Training Program
In a previous blog, we talked about the importance of performance indicators—specifically the relationship between learning performance indicators (LPIs), which measure the impact and effectiveness of training and key performance indicators (KPIs), which measure the effectiveness of a department or business function. The ability to which your LPIs support your KPIs will have a dramatic impact on financial performance and your ability to establish leadership in the marketplace. The next step is to create an executable model of how to deliver training against LPIs.
Ensuring a successful learning experience is a key strategy for any classroom training program, yet tying learning results back to business ROI is difficult and often overlooked. Instead, training managers look to create financial impact with lower logistical costs and modalities that offer more convenient delivery with little to no accountability for learner experience or learning performance.
One of the hottest learning modalities today is virtual training. From a high-level glance, virtual learning offers the “online delivery value” of convenience, less travel expense and cost-efficiency. In addition, because it’s “live training,” it also offers the “physical classroom benefits” such as increased knowledge transfer and retention, which translates into improved productivity.
1. Provide Learning As A Service But Outsource The Delivery Of The Virtual Training
At the onset, you will not have a good grasp on the adoption rate of your new virtual training program. Therefore, you’ll increase your chances for success and minimize your risk if you outsource the virtual training delivery. Investment costs in installing a new platform, building the infrastructure and purchasing licensing can add up quickly. Once a capital investment is made, related and associated costs of operating expenses (to provide and run the service) start to add up quickly as well. While lowering those expenses mitigates your financial risk, it doesn’t guarantee successful program delivery.

You may have turned to online training as a means to create economies of scale in your department. However, don’t overlook the value of face-to-face training and collaboration. The virtual environment allows a unique environment where instructors and students can visually interact without having to be in the same physical space. This visual component is most critical to knowledge transfer and engagement.
4. Ensure your courseware is prepared properly to work in a virtual training environment
Use modular-based training that is time-specific with combined local and virtual student participation. Allow and encourage students to learn from one another.
5. Prepare the instructor to keep students engaged and measure his/her effectiveness
There are various eLearning training programs and certifications that instructors can participate in to raise their learning experience awareness and hybrid training skills. Invest in this, and reap huge rewards.
6. Prepare students to be successful in the hybrid learning environment
Learning is a relationship and pre-, during- and post-class support is essential to empower your students to become ambassadors for your products and solutions. State your mantra as: ”failure is not an option” from a delivery and comprehension perspective.
7. Ensure the learning experience is properly managed
This is called Learning Experience Management (LEM), and once you have LEM as a measurement model, you have to compare that to your total cost of investment for the virtual training implementation. If you can get a high LEM number and a low investment cost, typically those two will play to your advantage.
Your stakeholders, customers, and students have choices—they want your support to ensure the time and money they invest in your company and respective training programs has a payback. Don’t rest on any previous training laurels, or simply take the low road in choosing an off-the-shelf learning delivery platform. Go back to the basics, manage the learning as a service and ensure the face of your company’s instructors can interact successfully with the face of your customers. LPI + KPI that are properly managed will always drive customer satisfaction and loyalty, the lifeblood of every company.
